About Infant Massage
Infant Massage is an ancient tradition
in many cultures, which is being rediscovered in the West.
Clinical evidence shows that loving, touching, nurturing contact between

Infant massage is something that every parent or caregiver can learn and

· Help babies in the development of their bodies
· Enhance parents' ability to understand their babies needs
· Aid digestion and help relieve colic, wind and constipation
· Help develop muscle tone, coordination and suppleness
· Strengthen Immune System
· Regulate breathing and relieve nasal congestion
· Improve skin texture
Class Structure
Classes meet once a week for 4 weeks.
The classes are designed for parents, grandparents and other caregivers
with their babies.
The ideal age for babies is birth to pre-crawling.
Participants massage their babies whilst being guided through a step-by-step
massage routine.
The routine is a carefully balanced combination of Swedish massage, Indian
massage and Reflexology.
Each participant receives individual attention.
Classes include relaxation techniques and talks on issues such as crying,
sleeping and baby emotions.
All participants receive handouts, massage oil and a copy of Vilma McClure's
book "Infant Massage".

The Massage in Schools Programme(MISP) is an International
innovation approach to improving children;s quality of life in school.
It intends to give children the chance to experience nurturing touch at
school in a safe way. It is a tool for teachers to help bring the school
curriculum alive for children.
The MISP can...
- increase body awareness, control, coordination and muscle tone
- reduces bullying, fighting and aggressive behavior
- improves confidence, self esteem and empowers children
- opportunity to say yes or no to touch
- improves relationships between children and their peers, parents,
siblings and teachers
- facilitates easier class management
- aids academic learning, through innovative use of touch
- encourages respect for other children, teachers, and the community
- brings creativity and fun into the classroom
- relaxes teachers and children
Class Structure
A trained Instructor will come to your school or facility
and instructs the children in the strokes of massage with the aid of a
second instructor, or the teacher.
The children practice the stokes, all of which have names
the the children know - e.g. climbing the rope, kneading bread etc.
Maths, Language skills, Geography and Storytelling can
all be carried out with the aid of massage, to make learning fun and to
use the sensory skill of touch.
The MISP is intended to be carried out once of twice a
day, usually first thing in the morning and after lunch, to help prepare
children for learning.
Parents and children are invited to a demonstration of
the MISP. Studies and research about MISP is available on request.
Instruction
- All MISP is carried out while fully dressed.
- Children massage each other, with permission, under teacher supervision.
- All children, aged 4-12 years can be taught the MISP with parental
permission.
- The back, head, neck and arms are massaged.
- At no time do the teachers or instructors touch the children.
- In a classroom setting, instruction takes 4 15-min sessions over 4
weeks.
- Each day the programme takes 10 mins.
We are currently planning to bring massage in schools
to as many schools as we can in South Dublin.
Other instructors are working to bring the MISP to
schools countrywide.
